From trash to treasure, with wise waste management

In 2023, we launched the “Bijak Kelola Sampah” program at our Graha Mitra office in Jakarta as part of our commitment to sustainable waste management practices. Through this initiative, we actively engage our employees in sorting waste into three categories: organic, non-organic, and residue.

Collaborating with Waste4Change, a social enterprise dedicated to zero-waste-to-landfill solutions in Indonesia, we aim to instill a culture of waste reduction and responsible disposal among Indika Energy employees, cleaning staff, and building management.

Our waste management strategy focuses on reducing landfill waste by implementing sustainable solutions for each waste category. Organic waste can be composted by black soldier flies (BSF), whose larvae can then be used as livestock feed, perpetuating a circular system and contributing to organic waste reduction. For non-organic waste, various options exist, including shredding plastic waste, compacting paper waste, and packaging glass and metal waste for safe distribution to Waste4Change recycling partners. Residual waste, meanwhile, undergoes a process using Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) technology to convert it into alternative fuel, further minimizing our environmental impact.

The implementation of the “Bijak Kelola Sampah” program has enabled us to measure waste management data regularly, facilitating monthly reports on waste generation and sorting trends. This data not only informs our sustainability reporting but also aids in evaluating the effectiveness of our waste management efforts and identifying areas for improvement.

Inspired by the success of the program at our Graha Mitra office, two of our subsidiaries, Indika Indonesia Resources and Indika Nature, have initiated their own waste management programs in collaboration with Waste4Change. Together, we are driving positive change and fostering a more sustainable future through responsible waste management practices.
